A Method for Spectral Analysis of Musical Sounds, Description and Performances

We propose a new digital method to make the physical analysis of non-percussive musical sounds. The hardware consists in an acquisition set-up with storage of the data in digital form.

The software uses a new type of spectral analysis. The calculation of successive Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and the treatment of the coefficients in the complex plane allows a simultaneous measurement of frequency, amplitude and time evolution. With this treatment we eliminate boundary-period effects and we may correct the results from the square-window perturbations. The analysis of a square wave signal as well as of clarinet sounds shows the possibilities offered by our method in comparison with other presently available procedures in the field.
