Measurement of Ultrasonic Diffraction Loss for Circular Transducers
Transducer calibrations without a primary standard in the MHz-frequency range are performed expediently in the near-field using the self-reciprocity technique for minimizing the sound attenuation corrections and the alignment problems. As a consequence a knowledge of the effective ultrasonic diffraction loss in the field of the transducer is necessary. In order to investigate how far the calculated diffraction corrections by Khimunin and Papadakis can be applied to real transducers, measurements with different circular transducers have been performed at normalized distances zλ/a 2 between 0.2 and 5, where z is the propagation distance, a is the transducer radius, and λ is the wavelength of the radiated sound wave. It is shown that the agreement between experiment and calculation is better than ±0.5 dB.
