Noise Level Threshold for Wakening and Wake-up Dependence on Noise Level

Wake-up probability is analyzed by optimization, using experimental data from [1]. The results may be summarised as follows. 1) The wake-up probability function is given by

W = 100 [l − exp {−0.02361 (L − 20.145)2/2}]%

where L = noise level in phones.

2) Wake-up noise level threshold is about 20 dB (A).

Variations in the wake-up probability function can appear in various groups of people. In those cases the coefficients in the equation mentioned above can be changed accordingly. This process can enable numerical comparison among various groups of people (age, sex, etc.).

It should be noted that the disturbance used was almost a white noise (see [1]), which minimized psychological effects such as the effect of recognized sounds (which may cause reduction of the wakening noise level).
