On the Time Pattern of the Threshold of Tone Impulses Masked by Narrow Band Noise
The question, to which extent the ear is able to follow random temporal changes of sound-pressure-level was studied. Short test-impulses were masked by a sequence of reproducible narrow-band-noise with different bandwidths at a centre-frequency of 4 kHz at a denned time delay, with respect to the beginning of the repeatedly presented narrowband-noise. The masked level-time pattern was expected to have a shape similar to the level-time pattern of the noise. This was found to be true for bandwidths smaller than about 100 Hz, for larger bandwidths the two patterns are not correlated.
