An Investigation of a Violin by Laser Speckle Interferometry and Acoustical Measurements

This investigation was conducted (1) to explore the usefulness of a laser speckle interferometer in studying the vibrations of a violin; (2) to investigate the effects of clamping on the vibrations of the violin; (3) to test a formal model describing violin vibrations. The investigation was limited to the range of the main wood resonance.

The experiments proved (1) that nodal lines could be detected easily and rapidly by means of a laser speckle interferometer, but that the displacement was difficult to measure; (2) that the clamping may suppress vibration modes; and (3) that the main wood resonance derived primarily from the first top plate mode which is in agreement with the suggested model.
