Influence of Air Flow on the Attenuation Characteristics of Resonator Type Mufflers

Theoretical and experimental studies are presented for the influence of air flow on the attenuation characteristics of resonator type mufflers. Theoretical values of the sound attenuation with flow are compared with measured values over a range of midstream-flow speeds U 0 ≦ 50 m/s.

The influence of air flow on the sound attenuation is explained by the equivalent resistance which is calculated from the kinetic energy loss at the aperture of a resonator. The effect of air flow, which reduces the attenuation of a muffler, is inversely proportional to the area of the aperture, that is, the longer the neck of an aperture becomes, the more the effect of air flow decreases, provided that the conductivity of an aperture is kept constant.
