Influence on the Tonal Quality of a Guitar of Various Materials for its Belly and Sides

Besides ebony, citron (Citrus Artan), maple, mahogany (Swietenia macrophilla) and other woods are used in the construction of concert guitars [2], [5], [6]. Constructors often build the upper resonance face of high quality juniper (Picea Excelsa). They perform the modelling according to their own models in the same way as in the case where the body of the guitar is constructed in ebony.

An analysis was made of the tones of a guitar so constructed with the upper resonance face in juniper (Picea Excelsa), the same model but with the lower face and the sides constructed in ebony, in citron and in maple.

Besides some common properties, due to the same material and to the same model of the upper resonance face, one has verified, through a comparison of the spectra obtained, differences due to the different biophysical properties of the woods utilised in the construction of the lower face and of the sides.
