It is shown: 1) that one can always express the solution of a diffraction problem with the help of a layer potential of some order (in general one uses simple or double layer); 2) that in the case of an external problem it is always possible to obtain an integral equation not having real eigenvalue, then always resolving the problem without the necessity of supplementary conditions. Some examples are given.
