Open Access Middle Ear Function: A Kinematic Analysis

Download Article:
The mode of transmission of energy through the middle ear has been the subject of many animal and other experiments. Although the qualitative aspects are well understood there are many facets of the quantitative aspect which remain to be documented in detail. A method of approach to achieve this end is mathematical simulation, a first stage of which is described here. The middle ear mechanism is subjected to topological analysis and an investigation of the number of its degrees of freedom. These are interpreted in the light of current knowledge of the mode of operation. The analysis has resulted in a number of alternative suggestions relating to details of the modes of motion of the ossicles. Evaluation of the suggestions awaits more precise data on the relative elasticities of joints, ligaments etc. The importance of a detailed dimensional geometrical model of the middle ear for further work is described.
