Artificial Ear for Circumaural Earphones

As circumaural earphones are used for stereo phonograph quality control over their acoustic characteristics and quantitative measurement on appraising tone quality are desired. Measurement is, generally, made on response by means of NBS-9A Type Coupler and ASA-1 Type Coupler. However, it is not in accord with real ear response and the improvement of coupler response does not necessarily result in that of earphone. For the purpose of solving this problem, we employed the artificial ear proposed by IEC and four different types of earphones to be tested for comparative investigation on the response of the artificial ear and that of real ear. Then, we established the correlations between ear leaks from narrow gaps of ear and earmuff and output impedance of the earphone and provided a low pass leak in the artificial ear.

For controlling over the coupler resonance at high frequency range sound absorbing material is stuck to the coupling plate and the response of the artificial ear is almost in accord with that of the real one.
