Subjective threshold calibration of a number of earphones and objective calibration of the same earphones on several artificial ears have been carried out. These measurements permit a direct test of internal consistency between three of the five combinations of earphone and artificial ear for which values of reference equivalent threshold sound pressure level are specified in the recently published I.S.O. Recommendation 389 [1]. The observed discrepancies between entries are much smaller than those known to exist between the various audiometric thresholds used before the Recommendation was published. Nevertheless, the differences are significant so that effort should be directed towards reducing them, and two possible ways of effecting this are described.
