A Comparison of Methods for Calculating the Loudness Level
The methods at present in use for calculating the loudness level yield differing results for the same sound spectrum. According to three methods , ,  the loudness level is calculated as a function of sound pressure level, band width, center frequency, and slope of the third-octave level diagram, and the results are compared. The differences vary between 0 dB and 10 dB depending on the nature of the sound. The divergences are not methodical. To gain a criterion for the actual (the subjectively perceived) loudness, measurements were made with 12 persons for several sounds which presented especially large differences among the calculated values.
