On the Noise of Street Traffic

Many community planning problems require a knowledge of the probable levels of traffic noise. A contribution to the knowledge of noise sources (e.g. rolling noise) other than that of the motor is presented with measurements on some passenger cars. The characteristics of the road surface prove to be important parameters. The second part of the paper deals with a model of natural traffic flow on a road and its comparison with measured noise levels. The agreement is good enough to allow the prediction of noise levels as a function of distance and traffic density in simple cases.
