The effect of periodic disturbances induced in the flow boundary layer above a flat plate is studied in a small water duct. The disturbances are excited near the leading edge of the plate and their influence on the flow along the plate is scanned by a hot-wire anemometer under various conditions. Characteristic frequency intervals are observed in which the induced disturbances are amplified by absorption of energy from the main stream. The transition of laminar to turbulent flow is considerably shifted towards smaller Reynolds numbers. Disturbances which cause exceptionally rapid instability proved to be boundary layer waves, characterized by their small propagation velocity. Good agreement of the observed data with theoretical predictions is confirmed as far as might be expected.

A more detailed description of the hot-wire measurements in water is presented as such experiments have often failed until now due to technical difficulties.
