Filtering effect of an elastic block contained in a waveguide

The solution is given to the problem of the transmission of a single waveguide mode through an elastic block contained in a rigid, lubricated parallel-plate waveguide. It is found that the reflected and transmitted waves consist of single modes of the same order as the incident mode. The way in which the transmission coefficient varies as the length of the block varies is considered, and it is found that the behaviour depends upon the particular range within which the frequency lies. The behaviour is examined for the three ranges in question with emphasis on possible lengths of complete transmission or reflection. Some results are presented for a particular case, and an application of the theory is suggested.
