An ultrasonic optical mirror system intended for producing two-dimensional pictures of the human heart in situ by the ultrasonic pulse-echo method has been developed. The system consists of two second degree surfaces, an ellipsoid and a hyperboloid of revolution. The properties of the mirror system have been investigated theoretically and experimentally. Compared with the conventional technique the most important advantages of the system are its highly increased resolving power and its larger aperture.
