Über versteifung und Erstarrung von Stosswellen
The expansion of a hot gas plasma, caused by an electric discharge through a liquid, generates a shock wave in this liquid. It is possible to increase the energy density in the plasma until the compression in the shock wave leads to almost complete occupation by the molecules of the available space. This in turn leads to stiffening and freezing of the shock wave. The propagation velocity of the shock front decreases from values above normal velocity of sound to lower values and finally approximates to zero. Then this frozen-in shock wave becomes mobile again and a new shock wave is generated in front of the first one. These phenomena were photographed using X-ray flashes.
