The problem of the audibility of safety acoustic signals aboard-ship is still one to be resolved satisfactorily even today, for it is bound-up at the same time with the problems of sound propagation and that of the audibility of sound in the presence of noise.

In this work, the author has first studied in detail the acoustical characteristics of various types of sources which are actually used (sirens, gongs, bells), investigating particularly the spectra and the acoustic powers generated. He looks then at the laws of sound propagation, pointing out the effect of the principal atmospheric factors (wind, temperature, humidity). Following this, after having studied the nature of the noises on board-ship, he proposes a method for determining the radiated power and the optimum frequency of sound emission in order to obtain a satisfactory audibility.
