The thermophone method is certainly one of the oldest used for determining the pressure efficiency of condenser microphones. The equipment described here is that which has been developed in the Acoustics Department of C.N.E.T.; the utmost care has been given in the “set-up” and the error of measurement is less than 0.2 dB. Although the thermophone seems somewhat abandonned by the majority of laboratories in the preference for the method of reciprocity, it remains an extremely interesting instrument for its purely thermodynamical mode of operation makes it independent of other methods and thus allows interesting comparisons to be carried out.
