Determination of the complex YOUNG'S modulus of polymers at audiofrequencies in a wide temperature range

A new optical system for the detection of standing and progressive flexural waves on rods is described.

Experimental data of Young's modulus and loss factor obtained with polymethylmethacrylate and pure and plasticized polyvinylchloride are reported. The measuring range extends from 50 to 1000 c/s and from — 8 0 to + 100° C.

In an attempt to measure three dynamic elastic constants of several polymers at medium frequencies in the temperature range covering the main transition, Young's modulus was determined. Although such measurements have frequently been reported, the authors feel that other workers in this field might be interested in the measuring technique and in some of the results.
