Numerous experiments have proved that the response of loudspeakers in a normal room is different from that found in a deadened room. For some time one has sought for a method which would permit the study of loudspeakers under acoustic conditions, at the same time reproducible and approximating to those of final usage.

Measurements have thus been made with loudspeakers, close to reflecting surfaces, in reverberant rooms and in typical rooms met in usage. All these measurements give quite evidently results entirely different, the extent of the divergence depending clearly on the acoustic nature of the sound source being measured.

It seemed interesting to us to examine closer the physical reasons for these divergences. This knowledge would permit the discovery of the correlation between the response curves obtained under various acoustic conditions and enable a forecast (at least roughly) to be made of the behaviour of a loudspeaker in its place of final usage.
