Apparatus and methods are described for the judgment of a special subjective effect of a simple sound field. The sound field — consisting of a primary sound and one or more echoes — is generated by electroacoustic means and presented to the test person in an anechoic room.

The “absolute threshold of perceptibility ”(absolute Wahrnehmbarkeitsschwelle or “a Ws”) is measured as a function of the different sound field parameters.

It follows that the absolute threshold of perceptibility increases with increasing level of the primary sound. The influence of the duration of the sound signals is investigated for primary sound and echoes coming from the same direction. For signals coming from different directions the absolute threshold of perceptibility is given as function of the direction of incidence of the signals. The influence of an additional (second) echo on the absolute threshold of perceptibility is described as a function of delay time and direction of incidence of the additional echo. — The admissibility of self-tests is proved.

From the results, the measuring error being less than ± 1,5 dB, many indications are given to the subjective effects of natural sound fields. A possibility of further investigations is discussed.
