Experimental study of singing vanes

Using model vanes in a 30-inch water tunnel, the basic mechanism of the singing propeller has been studied and the effect of thickening the trailing edge of a vane has been examined. The singing has been shown to be a resonant excitation of the vane by the trailing von Karman street, modified by the effect of the vane's vibration.
