On the interaction between plate bending waves and their radiation load

A specially defined impedance is used to calculate the speed of flexural waves in a plate loaded with a medium of finite or infinite extent. There is no (coincidence) frequency at which the flexural wave speed in a l o a d e d plate can exactly equal the speed of sound in the surrounding medium; this restriction applies not only to an infinite medium but also to all modes of propagation in a medium of finite extent. The plate-load interaction can shift the flexural wave speed significantly in the regions of "coincidence", as is shown in two examples.
