For a given Rayleigh type of model the entry impedance is calculated exactly having regard to viscosity and thermal conduction, and the damping and phase velocity in front of the model is estimated for the case of grazing incidence.

A large model on the Rayleigh principle, a cross-grating model and a statistical model, all made of small Rayleigh elements were made. These were placed in turn as absorbers on the walls of a tube of square section. Small suspended particles make the sound field visible in and in front of the absorber.

Measurements of propagation between 16 and 2500 c/s in the model and in the tube agree with the theory. The circulation of air in the absorbers was also observed
