The noise heard inside powered vehicles comes partly by conduction through the sides of the wagon walls from the motor and road wheels and partly by radiation through the ambient air. Only the first can be reduced by structural damping. Such damping materials have been included in the walls of a motor coach; vibration and sound tests made before and after the treatment on the bench and on the road and the reduction in the two transmitted components inside the vehicle compared. As they are of the same order the treatment cannot produce a large overall improvement.
