By collating previous measurements made in zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, bismuth, mercury, sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium and gallium it is shown that at the melting point the quotient of the velocities of longitudinal waves in the solid and liquid phases lies about 1.26, and the quotient of velocity of extensional waves in the solid phase and of longitudinal waves in the liquid phase lies about 1.03, or for practical purposes 1.
