Resilient mountings, inserted between a source of vibration (unbalanced rotary machines, etc.) and the foundation, may sometimes produce an increase of transmitted vibrations. This phenomenon cannot be explained on the basis of the usual simple theory. The improved theory must include the mechanical input impedance of the foundation in the complete vibrating system. The present paper describes the development of apparatus for measuring that impedance, and of a simplified model thereof, and measurements of transmitted vibrations for different values of the input impedance of the foundation, results of which confirm the theory. The authors discuss also the validity of the conventional quantity “transmission coefficient” when the input impedance of the foundation is modified and suggest the use of the quantity: “Ratio of apparent powers”.
