The efficacy in sound diffusion of plane walls having diffusing elements cquidistantly fixed to their surfaces has been investigated by measuring the geometrical reflections in the frequency range 15 to 60 kc/s. A narrow beam of sound (angular width about 20°) is reflected at the surface of a test-wall and the angular distribution of the reflected sound is recorded over a range of nearly 180°. From these measurements a “diffusion-index” is obtained (ratio of reflected sound energy outsido the “20°-region” of the geometrical reflection to the total of the reflected energy). For three different kinds of diffusing elements (with hemi-cylindrical, triangular and roctangular cross-section) the dependence on the following parameters has been considered:

1. Ratio of the grating constant to tho wavelength of sound (“frequency response”),

2. Ratio of tho width of the individual elements to the grating constant,

3. Ratio of the dopth of tho diffusing arrangement to tho wavelength of sound,

4. Anglo of incidence.

All parameters have been investigated with the grating in front of a perfectly absorbing backing as well as in front of a perfectly reflecting backing.
