Evaluation of stress concentration of a lowcarbon steel based on residual magnetic field measurements
In this research, the correlation between the stress concentration and the residual magnetic field (RMF) of Q235 steel was investigated. Tensile tests were carried out to measure the RMF signals on the surface of steel specimens with various stress concentration factors. It was found that both the tangential and normal components of the RMF signals are sensitive to the abnormal magnetic changes caused by local stress concentration in the defect area. The abnormal magnetic changes are positively correlated to the magnitude of the load and the stress concentration factor. The abnormal magnetic peak and magnetic gradient are effective in characterising the degree of stress concentration. The magnetic stress concentration factor can be used to evaluate the stress concentration factor. This research provides a potential possibility for quantitative inspection of the stress concentration in ferromagnetic steels using the RMF measurements.
