This paper presents the design and manufacturing conception and construction of a monitoring system, which allows the detection and intensity evaluation of partial discharges occurring in high-voltage transmission lines and substation insulators. The prototype system consists of six low-cost and energy-efficient measuring heads, which register optical radiation intensity in the ultraviolet range and transmit the results wirelessly to a server computer. Each measuring head uses two separate measurement paths and a differential system to eliminate the optical interference coming from the sun's radiation. The measuring system has been tested on electrical power insulators under laboratory conditions and is currently installed on an overhead transmission line, with a rated voltage equal to 110 kV, for the diagnostic purposes of the insulators. Examples of the results achieved during test studies are included in this paper. Additionally, the paper presents scientific and technical issues related to the designed online monitoring system, which can be taken into account in further developments. The most significant contribution of the paper is connected with the presentation of a low-cost, energy-efficient system that operates automatically and without any human control, the implementation of which may reduce the diagnostic costs of overhead power transmission lines and substation insulators.
