Ultrasonic testing of the diffusion bonding of titanium alloys
This paper presents an ultrasonic testing system design for diffusion bonding between two identical Ti-6Al-4V alloys with different bond qualities. The method requires a single normal-incidence ultrasonic immersion focusing system. A narrow pulse width and high frequency of the transducer
has been selected. The displacement of transducer in X-Y-Z directions is precisely manipulated by a step-controlled system to ensure the accuracy of focus length and repetition of measurement. Optimised testing parameters, such as crystal diameter, focus length, diameter of focal column, and
length of focal column were selected to obtain good reflections from tested samples. Three diffusion bonding samples with perfect bonding, bad bonding and a rough bonding face are tested using the above system and ultrasonic signals have been analysed from the time and frequency domains. The
ultrasonic echo from the bad bonding is most smooth while the echo from the rough surface is distorted; the echo from the perfect bonding is in the middle. When the diffusion bonding is perfect, the reflected ultrasonic energy is mainly distributed in the frequency zone, from 6.95 MHz to 23.5
MHz. For the bad bonding quality, the energy concentrates over the range 10.0 MHz to 22.3 MHz. For the rough bonding face, the energy scatters over a wide range of the frequency domain from 12.2 MHz to 22.9 MHz, 28.8 MHz, 43.9 MHz and 48.3 MHz.
