Status and prospects of NDT for rail quality at Kuznetsk Steel Works, Russia
The method and apparatus for automated non-contacting inspection of rails in the process of production are examined. Rails are tested by means of an ultrasonic mirror-shadow method with shear waves excited by electromagnetic acoustic transducers. The status of the eddy current method for rail inspection is also reviewed. The author recommends development of the eddy current method and instruments for detection of surface and below-surface defects in rails.
