Teaching Health Care Reform: Lessons from the Classroom

The purpose of this article is to share methods of teaching health reform in a health policy course within a health management-related program. Two methods presented are at the rmdergraduate level and one in a graduate program. The authors have taught health policy for several years, with one in a private, Catholic college within a major healthcare system that must adhere to traditional belief, and be supportive of service learning. The other two institutions are larger state universities. Within this article, the authors have summarized their methods applicable to similar courses and programs, given this momentous policy change. The exercises are course and current-event relevant, exciting, and easy-to-teach for students pursuing a profession in healthcare. At the completion of any of these methods, students say that they were a part of heal th reform, even in some small way.
