Banana Tissue-Nanoparticle/Nanotube Based Glassy Carbon Paste Electrode Biosensors for Catechol Detection

In this work, glassy carbon paste electrode (GCPE) was modified with banana tissue and nanomaterials like gold nanoparticles (Au-nps) and HNO3 treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). As a result three types of (plain banana tissue-GCPE, treated MWCNT modified banana tissue-GCPE, Au-np modified banana tissue-GCPE) suitable biosensors for catechol (1,2-dihydroxybenzene) detection were obtained. Electrochemical performances of these electrodes were compared in terms of operating potential and analytical characteristics. Best current value at −0.2 V was observed with treated MWCNT modified banana tissue-GCPE. On the other hand, wider linear range (25–1000 M catechol) and better R2 value (0.99) were obtained with Au-np modified banana tissue-GCPE. After optimization of experimental parameters and examination of analytical characteristics, these electrodes were subjected to catechol detection in wine samples by using standard addition method. From these experiments, best recovery value was obtained with Au-np modified banana tissue-GCPE (100.4%), while other two electrodes gave promising recovery values proving that usage of these electrodes for catechol detection in wine samples is possible.
