Non-Intrusive Pulse Wave Sensor for Vehicle Drivers

In this research, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) based pulse wave sensor system is developed to non-intrusively measure heart pulse wave signals from driver's palms. A sensor system is specially designed with two PVDF films separated with a damped film. The top film measures the mix of heart pulse wave signal and noise from changing gripping force, the bottom film measures the gripping force noise. With the use of adaptive filter noise cancellation, together with an accelerometer measuring vehicle vibration, the measurement noise from gripping force and vehicle vibration can be successfully eliminated. Experimental results show that the sensor system can provide clear pulse wave signals for heart rate variability analysis, which can be used to detect driver's vigilant state to avoid traffic accidents. The sensor is also non-intrusive and can be easily installed on vehicle steering wheel.
