Structural Control of Macroporous Noble Metals as Glucose Sensing Electrode Materials

Macroporous (mp-) Pt films, which were obtained by electrolytic deposition of Pt on polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) template films and subsequent removal of PMMA, were investigated as an electrode material for a glucose sensor. The PMMA template films had a comparatively ordered three-dimensional (3D) array, and then the resulting mp-Pt films also showed the structure reflecting the template films. This macroporous structure with a high specific surface area resulted in an increase in glucose response and an extension of the detection limit, because of the large active area of immobilized glucose oxidase (GOD). The effects of mediator immobilization and the kind of GOD immobilization methods on the glucose sensing properties were also studied. Among the electrodes tested, the mp-Pt electrode, on which an appropriate amount of GOD was immobilized by dripping technique and the mediator was sandwiched between the mp-Pt and GOD layer, showed the highest glucose sensing properties. It was also revealed that the thin and uniform immobilization of GOD was effective for improving the response stability.
