Evaporation Properties of Oxide Dispersion Strengthened Pt–Au Alloys

Volatilization tests were carried out on ODS Pt–Au alloys to reveal their high temperature volatilization properties. The properties were examined by measuring the weight change in the alloys and by observing their microstructures. The test results showed that the ODS Pt–Au alloy were more volatile than ODS Pt, as determined from the weight-change variations in the alloys. Micro defects were observed in the ODS Pt–Au alloy after the volatilization tests. This was attributed to the relatively high diffusion coefficient of Au, which can be explained by the Kirkendall effect.
