Design and Installation Technique of Ocean Floating Photovoltaic Systems with Advanced Materials
The K-water company developed and installed an ocean floating photovoltaic demonstration plant at Sihwa Lake in October 2013. They expanded the scope of existing floating photovoltaic systems from reservoirs to the sea by developing an ocean floating photovoltaic system. Unlike conventional floating photovoltaic systems, the ocean floating photovoltaic system is greatly affected by tidal currents and typhoons. The structure and mooring facility of the developed ocean floating photovoltaic system was based on the effects of tidal currents and winds. This paper describes the construction procedure of the ocean floating photovoltaic system based on a working design. The major details of the procedure include the construction of the structure, mooring system, auxiliary mooring device, and power system. The manufacture of the buoys and the assembly of the aluminum frame are described in the section on the structure construction. The installation of the mooring device and connection of the mooring rope are described in the section on the mooring system. The construction of the auxiliary mooring system that can maintain tension under water level fluctuations is described in the section on the auxiliary mooring device. The details regarding the laying of power cables and installation of the remote monitoring system are described in the section on the construction of the power system. The 11 kW ocean floating photovoltaic system operates with an average capacity factor of 16.76%. This is the world's first ocean floating photovoltaic system and is anticipated to be used as a reference example for the stability of these systems and for the creation of large-scale power generation facilities in the future.
