Sol–gel derived transparent nano-glass-ceramics doped with Ho3+ and co-doped with Yb3+–Ho3+ or Yb3+ –Ho3+–Tm3+, containing cubic KYF4 nanocrystals, have been successfully synthesized and characterized by XRD measurements. Strong red, green and blue, along with relatively weaker UV up-conversion emissions were obtained under infrared excitation. Up-conversion mechanisms have been discussed in terms of energy transfer and cross relaxation processes. An efficient white light source was obtained in the triply-doped samples by means of an adequate concentration of rare earth doping ions, processing temperature and adjusting the pump power.
