What Does the Hong-Ou-Mandel Effect Really Tell Us About the Nature of Light?

There seems to be some lack in the literature of a uniform understanding of the so called Hong-Ou-Mandel effect and what it really tell us, thus leaving room for diverse interpretations. Here, we present a review of the development of the understanding of the results given by the Hong-Ou-Mandel experiment and experiments similar to it, with emphasis on what the experimental results tell us and how they are interpreted. Following this development in a chronological way, we arrive at an interpretation of the HOM effect which is rather different from what was originally assumed.
