Synthesis of Superfine TiB2 Powders by Low-Temperature Carbothermal Reduction
Superfine TiB2 powders were prepared by carbothermal reduction using TiO2, H3BO3 and different carbon sources as raw materials. The effects of reactant ratio, type of carbon source and synthesis temperature on the purity, morphology and particle
size of the materials were studied. The results showed that the purity of the synthesized powder was more than 98% and the contents of C and O (impurities) were 1.02% and 0.72%, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed that the TiB2 powders featured a hexagonal
flake-like morphology. The particle size of the synthesized powder was 9.99 μm, as determined by laser diffraction analysis. Among the different carbon sources studied (carbon black, graphite, activated carbon and sucrose), carbon black produced TiB2 powder with the highest
purity, whereas sucrose generated TiB2 crystals with the most uniform hexagonal flake morphology.
