Structural, Optical and Photoelectric Properties of Nano-Crystalline CdS Thin Films Deposited by Electron Beam Evaporation

CdS thin films were deposited on glass substrates by electron beam evaporation with varying substrate temperatures. The films were annealed at 400 °C in nitrogen atmosphere, and the effects of substrate temperature on structural, optical and photoelectric properties were studied. X-ray diffraction showed that the preferred orientation of (002) plane increased first and then decreased. The surface morphology was measured by atomic force microscope and exhibited the homogeneous grain distribution and gradual increase in particles size. Furthermore, the improved absorption coefficient and reduced energy gap were deduced through the transmittance that was approximately 70% in visible region. Photoconductivity curves were investigated and revealed that the sample at substrate temperature of 200 °C had the fastest pulse response, lowest dark conductivity and saturated photoconductivity, and highest gain of photoconductivity.
