Anxiolytic Effects of Trachyspermum ammi Seeds in Mice

Ajowan (Trachyspermum ammi) is a popular kitchen spice which is routinely used as home remedy for the management of a wide range of gastro-intestinal disorders. Despite a number of studies on Ajowan, there is lack of sufficient data to support the traditional claims of anti-anxiety property of Ajowan. Therefore, the present study was designed to evaluate the effect of T. ammi seeds powder (TASP) on the anxiety like behavior in mice. TASP was administered along with diet in concentration of 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0% w/w for ten consecutive days. Anxiolytic behavior was studied using elevated plus mazes (EPM), hole board test (HBT) and light and dark paradigm (LDP). Ten days successive administration of TASP along with diet led to rise in open arm entries (number and time spent) in EPM, increase in nose pocking behavior in HBT and more time spent in light compartment in LDP. These results suggest the anxiolytic potential of Ajowan seeds and may prove to be an effective and possibly safe therapeutic option to treat anxiety.
