A CISe2 thin film solar cell has been successfully fabricated by a non-vacuum direct chemical spray pyrolysis technique. The metal chloride precursors were completely dissolved in distilled water. The prepared homogeneous precursor solution was sprayed onto a molybdenum-coated soda-lime glass substrate. In the as–deposited CISe2 thin film, well-connected small grains were clearly visible. The connected grains appeared to act as a precursor for an integrated network of nano-grains. In addition, although there were some pores between the networked grains, giant grains with few pinholes were observed during the selenization process. Subsequently, a CdS buffer layer and a ZnO window layer were deposited onto the CISe2 thin film to complete the CISe2 thin film solar cell. The efficiency of the fabricated CISe2 thin film solar cell was found to be 4.46%. In the near future, if we acquire micrometer-scaled grains with carefully controlled stoichiometry, more efficient CISe2 solar cells are expected from this spray method.
