Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Based on Sulfonated Poly(phenylene oxide) for Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB)

Polymer electrolyte membrane based on sulfonated poly(phenylene oxide) (sPPO) with high proton conductivity was prepared and its characteristics for VRFB were analyzed. Synthesis of sPPO polymer was confirmed by FT-IR and NMR analysis, and the basic properties of polymer electrolyte membrane were tested by DSC, water uptake, and dimensional change. Thermal and physical properties of sPPO polymer electrolyte membrane were in correspondence with DuPont’s Nafion 115 membrane, which is commonly used for VRFB. In conclusion, it was found that sPPO with low cost and high performance can be an alternative polymer electrolyte membrane to commercial Nafion membrane.
