Synthesis and Characterization of New Polynorbornenes with Imide Side Chain

In this study, we synthesized new polynobornene anhydrides (PNAs) with imide side groups. Three kinds of (o-, m-, p-)phenylenediamines and two kinds of anhydrides (trans-1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylic anhydride and phthalic anhydride) were introduced into the PNAs. All PNA films were prepared through thermal imidization process. PNA modified with various imide moieties in a side chain exhibited excellent optical transparency (>85%) in the visible region due to the weakened electron accepting properties and non-planar steric structure of the imide moieties. That characteristic originated from the alicyclic structure of polynorbornene. All PNA films exhibited good thermal stability and mechanical properties. These PNAs with imide side chain can be good candidates for substrates of flexible displays.
