This paper reports the synthesis and luminescence properties of rare earth doped CaYAl3O7 prepared via a sol–gel process. The phosphors have intense luminescence. In Ce3+/Tb3+ co-doped materials, there is energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ that enhances the luminescence of Tb3+. These materials may find applications in solid state lighting and radiation detection.
