The Application of Infrared Thermal Imaging Technology Evaluate the Effect of Pain-Inducing Point

Purpose: The objective of present study is use the infrared thermography to evaluate the clinical efficacy of pain inducing point in myofascial pain syndrome (MPS). Methods: 25 male patients (age: 27.8 ± 4.9 years old) were chosen in the experiment. 15 patients with MPS were selected as the experiment group and 10 healthy adults were selected as the control group. In the experiment group, the upper trapezius muscle of all participates exists the characteristic of pain-inducing points and traction pain with the accumulated hard knot and the local traction reaction. 2 ml 2% lidocaine was injected on the pain-inducing point and the control group was injected with 2 ml normal saline in bilateral. Infrared thermography was performed pre- and post-treatment for 15 min, 30 min, 60 min and 24 h. The temperature difference was compared in intra- and inter-group. Results: The difference of temperature between injection and pre- and post-injection was statistically significant (P < 0.05) in experiment group; no statistically significant was found in control group (P > 0.05). The difference of temperature between groups was shown significant difference in pre- and post-treatment. Conclusion: Local injection of lidocaine is better than normal saline. The application of infrared thermal imaging technology can effectively evaluate the treatment effect of pain-inducing point and dynamically monitor the treatment effect of pain-inducing point.
