In this paper, authors deals with the primary transmission network present in India, modelling and its operation of double circuit with 400 kV lines. The objective of this paper will be analyses several options for converting the existing system to an HVDC line keeping the conductors and tower structure intact. A significant rise in the capability of net power transfer can be achieved by replacing the insulators alone—up to a factor of 5.7 with a ±380 kV HVDC triple bipolar configuration. Although HVDC systems suffer greater line losses than AC transmission lines, such a conversion would reap the advantages of HVDC and dedicated metallic return conductors. The proposed transmission line has been simulated in Matlab Simulink environment and the simulation results are tabulated.
